This walk reaches 3 hills which offer fine long views and crosses a landscape littered with remains from prehistory and the Roman era.
We walk out along Dere Street, the old Roman road, passing prehistoric cairns and a stone circle. We cut across fields to reach Hare Law and Thowlieston Hill, both fine viewpoints: the latter has an elaborate hillfort overlooking Hownam and gives long views towards the Cheviot and the Border hills.
We return over Philogar Hill to reach a track which takes us to Upper Chatto, from which we climb easily to Chatto Craig hillfort, another fine viewpoint. We cross the moorland via a standing stone, back to the starting point, from which Roman marching camps can be viewed.
Although there is no one strenuous climb, this walk crosses extended open moorland, and walkers should be properly equipped for hill walking. It is probable that cattle will be encountered, but those met on the recce were very timid and caused no problem.
At Pennymuir village hall, there is limited parking space by the roadside, and more in the field in which the hall stands. The ground there is firm. There will be the usual lunch stop and drinks stops.
Circular walk, grade B+, strenuous. Hiking boots and poles are recommended.
