Start Jacksons Brickworks
10:00am SK12 1TY SJ945843
This easy short walk is approximately 5 miles, with 285ft of ascent and billed as Ramble with a Ranger. Martin James, Cheshire East Ranger, who is based at Teggs Nose, will be joining us, along with members of the public. This will be a very leisurely walk with frequent stops for Martin to chat about what we can see and hear.
We start from Jacksons Brickworks Car Park, where it’s still free to park. Martin will take us on a circular tour of the nature reserve at Jacksons’ Brickworks in Higher Poynton, a special place, reclaimed by nature after its industrial interlude. It is now so valuable for wildlife that it has been designated a Local Nature Reserve (LNR). The 9½ hectare site is managed as a mosaic of different habitats. We will stop for a short break after this section of our walk.
From there we will make our way to The Poynton Inclines. Prince's and Lady's, were part of the extensive Poynton Colliery railway system, constructed to move coal from the pits to transport hubs like the Macclesfield Canal and Stockport. It is now maintained as a local woodland amenity. We will make a second stop along the way for a snack/lunch where we’ll hopefully see amazing views across to Greater Manchester and beyond.
From there we will head to the Macclesfield canal which we’ll cross before making our way across the fields back to the start.
The scheduled return time is 2pm but it could be earlier. Any questions contact me on 07729327940. Please remember to bring your ICE information, drinks, snack/lunch. A GPX file for the walk is available if you contact me.
