We head off from the lay-by towards the Ravenstone Hotel and take a right turn up a short, steep section which eases once we reach the main track. We then head uphill along The Edge to Ullock Pike & along Longside Edge to Carl Side, the highest point on the walk & overlooked by Skiddaw. The views are great, weather permitting! Although it’s a long steady climb to reach Carl Side, we will maintain a steady pace and take plenty of breathers.
We then head downhill, some sections are quite steep, until we reach Dodd Wood. We’ll then climb up onto Dodd before heading down into the wood with refreshments in the cafe before walking back to the cars.
The terrain uphill is varied but always on well used tracks. The downhill path is fairly steep with a section on rocky ground where care should be taken to avoid slips.

The parking is the 3rd lay-by/pull in after Dodd Wood car park. If you reach the Ravenstone Hotel you’ve gone too far.
