A fantastic walk with beautiful views of the central lakes. We start from just outside Grasmere and walk up to Alcock Tarn, where on a clear day you can see as far as Windermere and Coniston, then we descend in a southerly direction to join the Coffin Route which links Grasmere and Rydal. At Rydal church we cross the main road and head towards Rydal Water and uphill, passing Rydal caves to reach Loughrigg Terrace, with views down to Rydal Water and across to the fells opposite, as well as Helm Crag in the distance. We return to Grasmere via Red Bank Wood, and then cross fields to return to the cars.
The walk is all on clear well maintained paths, and will be done at a moderate pace. There is a fairly steep climb up to Alcock Tarn and the descent towards the Coffin Route is stony, with one rocky section. Some sections may be wet or muddy after rain.
