We start our walk from the road on the fell above Helton village, close to the "Ullswater Way" sign post. Taking a lesser trodden track we cross Tarn Moor to the ancient Cockpit stone circle. From here we take the obvious track of High Street Roman Road as it steadily climbs with Ullswater on our right hand side. We pass by Aurthur's Pike and Lords Seat before reaching the summit of Loadpot Hill at 672 meters, marked by a trig point. This exposed, wide, flat topped summit feels remote and has expansive panoramic views, incorporating Ullswater and the Helvellyn range and is a "Wainwright".Β
The ground on and around the summit plateau can be wet and boggy, particularly after rain.Β Leaving the summit of Loadpot Hill we start our descent via Hart Hill, taking a route down to Dalehead. We cross Heltondale Beck and pass through Scales Farm to return us to the lane on the fell above Helton village.Β
This is a remote and exposed route and can be boggy in places.Β
Toilets and refreshments in nearby Askham village.
