This circular walk takes in some of the many areas of the National Forest that have been reclaimed since the days of mining for nature and leisure use. We'll pass through Mayfield Woods, Thortit Pit and Donisthorpe Country Park using a mix of field walking and hard paths with a couple of short road sections. There is also a public footpath that was reclaimed after many years of being closed and a long battle that I believe went all the way to the high court. There'll be 2 stops, including one at Hicks Lodge where there are toilets and a good cafe for anyone wishing to buy refreshments.
For those who would like a drink afterwards there is a cafe at Moira Furnace and pub 5 mins walk away.
Moira Furnace, Furnace Lane, Moira, DE12 6AT. Please meet in the car park nearest the Furnace building (on the right at the very end of Furnace Lane). If you do use the first car park by the childrens play area you will need to walk through the woods to reach the meeting point. Please message me or call to pre-book on this walk
