We start from Renwick high street, and walk along a quiet lane to Haresceugh Castle ( only a grass mound left). This was a fortified house built by the wife of a Norman noble, who built Lanercost Priory. Back in Norman times, Lanercost to Renwick to Appleby was a busy route. We then continue along the lane to Selah Bridge, and then up the grassy bridleway to Hartside Hill ( 1903 feet) where we will have lunch. After lunch we follow another grassy bridleway across Twotop Hill, across A686 and down to Unthank. From Unthank we traverse fields back up to Haresceugh Castle and then back along the lane into Renwick. Note: the grass bridleways are rutted, stony and maybe boggy.
Note: the walk occurs during the road works on M6 ( which is shut at the weekends for early January). Hence, bridge at Langwathby may be a bottleneck. Alternative routes to Kirkoswald are via Great Sakeld and Lazonby or up A6 to Plumpton and then via Lazonby.
