From Shap summit we set forth upon the wild Wasdale horseshoe, where atmospheric convulsions chase rain across the sodden moor, the wind scourges the gaunt thorn, and treacherous bogs clutch tenaciously at our weary boots. Our course bears us over Great Yarlside (1,939 ft), onward to the desolate majesty of Grey Crag (2,093 ft), and thence to Tarn Crag (2,176 ft), a brooding sentinel above the lonely vale of Longsleddale. The return lies by streaming beck and untamed moorland, until at length we come, with no small gratitude, to the haven of our waiting conveyances, thus completing a circuit of the Easternmost Lakeland fells that is as exacting as it is richly rewarding.
