The walk starts in Borrowdale and immediately gains height on a steep, well-defined path climbing through Nitting Haws. Above this, the route follows the broad ridge leading to High Spy, where there are extensive views across the Derwent fells, including Skiddaw to the north and the central Lakeland ridges to the west.
From High Spy the path descends south-east to High Doat. Although lower and less visited than nearby summits, High Doat offers one of the best viewpoints over the length of Borrowdale, with clear views down the valley towards Rosthwaite and beyond. The route then continues downhill into Johnny Wood, where the initially open descent gives way to the sheltered paths of the Borrowdale rainforest.
The final climb is up to King’s How. Its summit provides an excellent viewpoint, with wide views over Derwentwater and a final overview of Borrowdale. From here, paths descend back into the valley, completing a varied circuit that combines steep climbs, open ridges, woodland paths, and well-positioned viewpoints.
