Overview

This is a 10 mile walk, starting a little later than usual so that people who wish to can join the optional social event to the Richmond fireworks display afterwards. Although we don’t start until 12, please bring a packed lunch or snacks for a break.

It is a lovely autumnal walk taking in some of the highlights of Richmond Park and there will almost certainly be lots of deer to see. We start at Richmond Station and quickly make our way to the river to begin our walk. Presently, we cut uphill through the Terrace Gardens and into Richmond Park.

We will head towards the beautiful vista of Pen Ponds and then on to the Isabella Plantation, where we’ll have a short lunch stop at about 1.30pm. At the recce on 25 October there remained some lovely autumn colour to see here.

After lunch, we’ll hug the eastern edge of the park before edging back in to look at the Royal Ballet School, a former hunting lodge built for King George II. From here we’ll make our way back towards the Richmond Gate.

Upon leaving the park, we return back downhill into town, passing the train station at around 4.30pm for anyone not joining the evening social.

For those who are joining the social we’ll go on to the Hope pub to rest our legs with a few drinks before heading to the firework display at the Richmond Athletic ground at about 6.00pm. Food is available in the pub, but hotdogs, pancakes, mulled wine etc will also be on sale at the firework display. Please note tickets to the firework display must be bought in advance (https://www.rag-events.co.uk/major-public-events-at-the-rag/richmond-family-fireworks/). There will be no tickets on sale at the door.

The firework display will finish by 7.30pm, but the funfair and stalls stay open until 9.00pm. More details are on the listing for the social event.
