This is quite a hilly downland walk, which follows the Ridgeway east from the B4494 Newbury-Wantage road and passes the Baron Wantage monument, before heading south-eastwards down Old Street, at this point a broad green ride, as far as Lands End. Here we cross the lane before continuing along Old Street, now uphill and more enclosed, before crossing fields to reach Farnborough, reputedly the highest village in Berkshire. We shall stop for a mid-walk break in the churchyard here, and it will be possible to visit the colourful stained-glass windows at the west end of the church, designed by John Piper in memory of John Betjeman. From here we head back to the Ridgeway past Lockinge Kiln Farm and Triangle Wood, crossing and re-crossing the B4494 in the process.
Conditions underfoot shouldn't be too bad on the whole, but there are bound to be some muddy stretches, so sturdy footwear is essential. There will also be little shelter from the elements, so please dress appropriately, heeding the weather forecast for the day. Please bring a drink and a snack for the mid-walk break. There are no stiles on this walk and no restriction on numbers, but if you'd like to join us, please use the link to reserve your place by Monday 3rd March by 6pm.
