Overview

NB 11.00 start time

Meet and park, Church Farm, Ripple (Solley’s Ice Cream Parlour). There will be the opportunity to have breakfast, a cup of tea/coffee or an ice cream at Solley’s before the walk.

This circular walk will take us via Great Mongeham to the source of North Stream, where in mediaeval times it was a wide sea inlet connected to the Wantsum Channel. The walk will cross North Stream several times which will include following a recently reinstated footpath from the Burgess Green Road. We will then walk to Finglesham and follow a footpath to the site of Betteshanger Colliery, where we will have a short break. After the break the walk will be via Northbourne to St Martin’s Church at Great Mongeham where Captain Robert Maynard is buried (the person responsible for the end of Edward Teach’s reign as a pirate, better known as “Blackbeard”). From here we return to Solley’s where a light lunch and/or ice cream will be available to purchase.
