A leisurely walk through the land of the Ettrick Shepherd and Isabella Richardson, the famous inn-keeper.
This walk is a combination of leisurely and strenuous sections, overall ‘moderate’. Terrain: a mix of grass paths and forestry tracks. Undulating. Mostly good walking conditions, but may be wet / muddy in places. Hiking boots and poles are highly recommended.
Starting on the Captain’s Road (a former drove road), we take the SUW. After passing Tibbie Shiel’s Inn, we follow a forestry track which climbs steadily for about a mile. We then switch to an undulating grass path, passing the lonely ruins of Riskinhope Cottage (once a shepherd’s home) before skirting the shoulders of Pikestone Rig and Peat Hill. After descending to the shoreline near Riskinhope Farm, we return along the eastern shore of the loch towards Tibbie Shiel’s Inn. Good photo opportunities, weather permitting.
Refreshments and toilets are available at the Glen Café.
Circular walk, grade B, moderate. Hiking boots and poles are recommended.
