Overview

This circular route offers a wonderful balance of tranquil riverside paths and elevated views over Winchester's countryside.

We begin with a stretch south along the River Itchen. Then we climb west up Shawford Down, past Yew Tree Hill and take in the view from Whiteshute Ridge, which offers spectacular views across to Cheesefoot Head. Our return leg brings us back through the historic water meadows, a classic Winchester landscape.

The walk will be at medium pace and include some hills.  A reasonable standard of fitness will be required.

There will be a refreshment stop in the morning and a picnic lunch.  You will need to carry all refreshments for the day, including plenty of water.  There are no facilities en route.  A comfort stop will be made in the woods.

Please bring your food and drink needs for the day.

Clothing should include layers needed for the conditions. Stout footwear is advisable.
