Bookable Event: Please book in with the walk leader by text or email by Wednesday 29th October, including meal choices if joining the pub lunch (see attached menu and link to the pub website below).
Please note that this all-day 10-mile walk includes a mid-way pub lunch and starts at the sligthly later than usual time of 10.30 a.m.
Head to The Lodge, Sandy to find the largest stretch of heathland in Bedfordshire. This rare habitat is the place to spot some of the reserve’s iconic species such as breeding Hobbies, Nightjars, Ravens, Common Lizards and Natterjack Toads.
Beyond the heathland, The Lodge nature reserve’s acid grasslands are a magnet for large flocks of thrushes who feed there in winter. Its hilly woodlands are filled with towering oaks, where in summer Spotted Flycatchers catch food for their brood. At this time of year, we should see lovely autumn colours and fungi.
It is intended to do a short loop within the reserve, then leave for the main walk cross-country, passing another cafe, and stopping for lunch mid-way at The John o'Gaunt Inn at Sutton (web link: http://www.johnogauntsutton.co.uk/ ).
The leader reserves the right to change the walking itinerary in the event of adverse weather conditions. Individuals are also at liberty to remain in the reserve and drive to the pub later if they wish.
