A walk to visit the Chillerton & Gatcombe Scarecrow Festival.
We will start from the Carisbrooke Priory car park at 11.00am. (This is to tie in with the No 6 bus currently listed to depart from Newport Bus Station at 10.50, arriving at the Carisbrooke Priory car park at 10.57. If the bus timings change when the summer timetable is published, start time will be adjusted so please double-check before the walk).
This is a bit of a "Save the Date" entry. Not yet sure the precise route pending recce (so check back on this Walks Programme nearer the time if you wish to know - or just enjoy the surprise), but aiming for a circular walk of aporox 6 miles.
Partway round we will have time for a leisurely stop in Chillerton to wander view the scarecrows, and if wished to enjoy tea and cake in the pop-up tearoom at the Village Hall (or possibly a drink in the Gallybagger Inn depending on timings). There should be a toilet at the Hall. We will then reconvene for our return to the Priory car park.
TRAVEL:
I'll do my best to assist as regards time estimates, checking timetables, and suggestions re possible travel logistics. However with this as with all walks, these can’t be guaranteed. Your travel arrangements are your responsibility so you need to satisfy yourself regarding your own individual needs and circumstances.
By car:
Carisbrooke Priory car park (free). It's the one on the bend of Whitcomb Road opposite Carisbrooke Priory, don't go into the actual Priory.
By bus:
The No 6 bus which leaves Newport bus station at 10.50 arrives at Carisbrooke Priory at 10.57
(Or coming from the opposite direction there is a No 6 bus which arrives at Carisbrooke Priory at 10.59)
(NB: These bus times are based on current timetable and may change when the Island Buses summer timetables are published, so please check back nearer the time)
Car share:
In the interests of the air, parking, and non-drivers, if anyone is able to offer, or needs, a car-share then please post on WhatsApp group (to join group please message Serena 07564-811690).
Bring drinks - and food if wished. (We should be able to get some sustenance in cake form at the Village Hall in Chillerton....)
Depending on the weather, consider suitable clothing, footwear, walking pole(s) (this walk is a steep one, with some uneven steps and surfaces, and additionally may be muddy in parts), sun cream, drinks, and food. Watch out for ticks and remove ASAP. If you are unsure about your ability to undertake this walk, please contact the walks leader. If you need to leave the walking group, please ensure you inform the leader or back marker
Please note there will be short sections of road walking, and roads to be crossed – please walk in single file and take good care.
