Overview

Part of the South Downs National Trail.
A two option walk visiting the dramatic hill fort of Cissbury Ring from the south, then continuing to the famous landmark of Chanctonbury Ring before descending to the village of Washington where the shorter walk ends (8 miles).
Walkers completing the full walk ascend Barnsfarm Hill and then enjoy a mostly level six mile ridge walk, ending with fine views of the Arun valley before ending at down at Amberley Station.
The second half of the walk is easier than the first. Tracks are generally good throughout both walks, but there is a steep set of steps leaving Cissbury Ring and a steep and sometimes slippery descent to Washington on the shorter walk. Poles useful, boots essential.

This is longer than some of our walks, so there is an opportunity to leave (or join us) at the Frankland Arms where reasonably priced food is available, ( and hopefully a sit down!)
Walkers ending here will be able to return to Worthing by the half hourly bus service "1" or "23" independently.
The leader will continue to Amberley unless adverse conditions limit the walk to 8 miles.

In either case walkers should bring water and a snack in case its not possible to eat at the pub. Its also possible to have a picnic near the village church if you don't wish to visit the pub.
Walkers need to come prepared for winter conditions as most of this long walk is exposed to the weather and can be significantly worse than at valley level.
Assistance dogs only on this walk please.
