A 12.3 mile walk in the heart of the Test Valley, an historic part of Hampshire, frequently mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book.
The walk start is the National Trust car park in Spearywell on the edge of the Mottisfont Estate, a mosaic of habitats from woodland, farmland and rivers. It is a working woodland and part pf a woodland restoration project.
Leaving the car par, we head eastward towards West Dean, with views over the former Royal Navy Armament and Nuclear Weapons storage facilities. We will pause for a morning refreshment stop at West Dean before striking out for The Tytherleys. Lunch will be taken at St. Peters church in West Tytherley. This structure dates back to the 1200s but the original medieval building stood in the churchyard across the road to the east. Described as ruinous in December 1831, this new church was built in April 1833. At East Tytherely, we pass The Church in the Field - also named as the parish church of St. Peter, set back from the road looking out over farm fields.
We walk the length of the runway at Oaklands Farm (international) Airport before returning via Spearywell Woods.
Expect firm underfoot conditions but if there is significant rain prior to the day, some sections could be muddy. Mostly a mix of farm and forest paths with field crossings. Some sections are metalled and stretches of road are both quiet and not so quiet country roads.
There are 12 stiles and 4 wooden footbridges, which are mostly in good order but are to be approached with care. If conditions are wet walking poles could prove useful.
The number of participants is limited to 20 given the size of the car park and its regular use by dog walkers. Please register online using the link below by 6pm, Wednesday, 15 October.
Refreshments are required, as is appropriate walking kit.
