A walk following the valley of the River Stort Navigation canal from Bishop's Stortford to the confluence with the River Lee and ending at Rye House Station (map attached). The walk will follow the canal towpath and so is level all the way, except a short uphill walk to the lunch stop. The total distance is 14 miles but there are number of drop out points along the route to shorten the distance at Sawbridgeworth (5 miles), Harlow (9 miles) and Roydon (12 miles). At each location there is a rail station close to the walk returning to Tottenham Hale and Liverpool Street with 2-3 trains per hour. I plan to make a 10am start with an early lunch at Sawbridgeworth (picnic or pub lunch), as there are few suitable pubs further along.
Lunch will be at Sawbridgeworth. For picknicers there are a number of benches in the grounds of Great St. Mary's church. Pub lunch at The Queens Head. Please let me know by Tuesday evening if you would to book a seat. Refer to URL below.
Wear walking boots and bring walking poles if required. We will cross a few roads as we proceed along the river. No difficult styles.
There is no maximum number of attendees for this walk but do indicate your intention to join the walk (using the email link) to give me an indication of numbers, bookings for a pub lunch and if you have any specific questions.
There are toilets at Tottenham Hale, on the train and at Bishops Stortford Station.
Out: Train from Tottenham Hale to Bishops Stortford station departing 09.22 arriving 09:45
Back: Return trains at 20 and 50 minutes past each hour from Rye House station.
