A leisurely walk in the Low Weald of Kent. The area is made famous by The Darling Buds of May TV series, adapted from the book of the same name by the author H.E. Bates, who lived here at Little Chart Forstal, and whose house we pass on the walk. The countryside on this walk is quiet and scenic with some gentle slopes.
the walk sets out from Pluckley station through flat terrain, before reaching Little Chart. Continuing through the Low Weald, we come to the village of Pluckley for lunch where there are suitable picnic facilities, or the choice of a pub lunch at the Black Horse pub, reputed to be haunted, but hopefully not at 12:30 in the afternoon! The pub has an appetizing menu which can be viewed on the link below. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and I have provisionally booked a table for six. Anyone requiring a pub meal, please email or text me by Friday 11th July. After that date it will be left to individuals to book lunch on: 01233 224 224
After lunch we will continue to traverse the Low Weald, passing through the village of Egerton, finally returning to Pluckley station. Trains are one per hour to London, and I shall enedeavour to schedule the timing so as not to have to wait an hour at the station.
PLEASE CATCH THE 09:34 TRAIN FROM CHARING CROSS STATION. PURCHASE AN OFF PEAK DAY RETURN TICKET TO PLUCKLEY, WHERE I SHALL BE WAITING TO MEET PARTICIPANTS.
There are stretches of hard surface walking; a short stretch at the beginning of the walk, and two short road walks in the afternoon. These are on quiet country lanes with little traffic.
There are ten stiles in the afternoon, all negotiable, with one rickety stile, and one on marshy ground.
there is a small brook to cross with a rocky base and some shallow running water. Walking pole users might find them useful here.
There are no toilet facilities at Pluckley station.
The longer section of the walk will be after lunch.
