We are the Penrith Ramblers. We open the way for everyone to enjoy the pleasures of walking in our wonderful area.
From the layby overlooking the Lune River and M6 we follow the lane towards Roundthwaite village. We shortly take a bridleway left as we start our ascent using open access land to reach Jeffreys Mount. We continue keeping to the higher path and grassy tops of Borrowdale Edge towards Casterfell Hill and Belt Howe.
From Belt Howe we find a path down to the lonely Low Borrowdale Farm at the valley floor. Passing through the farm we are now on a good gravel path alongside Borrow Beck. We continue until we reach the A685. We carefully cross the A685 and then pass underneath two bridges, the M6 Bridge and the West Coast Main Line. At Salterwath Bridge we take a footpath through mature beech tree woodland alongside the river Lune. We again cross over the Lune at Lunes Bridge and return to the layby.
This area feels remote with mostly good paths, but some areas can be boggy. At the beginning and end of the walk there is a wonderful contrast between the vastness of the open fells in the Tebay Borrowdale Valley and the communting corridor of the M6 and West Coast Main Line.
