From the car park near the dam at Wet Sleddale Reservoir we pass Sleddale Hall, made infamous as Uncle Monty's cottage, Crow Crag, in the cult film "Withnail and I". We continue up hill passing by the evocatively named Bleak Hill, Gambling Crag, Seat Robert and Willy Winder Hill. This area is nearly always boggy, especially so after a period of rain.
We descend at Waite Howes into Swindale Valley alongside Gouthercrag Gill and cross Swindale Beck on a footbridge onto Swindale Lane. Turning left we follow the lane to Swindale Head and we pass the Forces Falls. We continue on a well defined path to Ash Knott and onto and cross Mosedale Beck where we pick up the return leg on path heading back and descending towards Wet Sleddale.
This area feels remote with mostly good paths, but some areas can be boggy where the path has become vague.
There are public toilets in nearby Shap, a cafe and pubs.
