A circular walk around the perimeter of The Marches Mosses passing Bronington and Bettisfield. The Mosses can be very wet in winter but this route uses mostly stone forest tracks, the Llangollen Canal towpath and a disused railway line and skirts the wet areas of the bog. The benefits are the diversity of wildlife on the ponds and wetlands. Fenn's, Whixall and Bettisfield collectively known as The Marches Mosses is the third biggest raised bog in Britain and is of international importance. For many years harvested for its Peat it is now a consevation area and is slowly returning to its natural state.
The Oswestry, Ellesmere and Whichurch Railway used an unusual technique to prevent their line from disappearing into the bog-floating their construction on layers of heather, wooden faggotts and sand. Trains ran successfully from 1862 for more than 100 years and today its still dry and carrying local motor traffic as well as walkers, cyclists and riders.
