A circular walk around Newtonmore’s countryside starting and ending at the Highland Folk Museum.
This is a varied walk starting at the far east end of Newtonmore and following the wildcat trail as it wanders down to the River Spey. We continue walking close but not along the banks of the river until we reach the west end of the village passing under the main rail line. We spied a few wildcats when we started and again as we re entered the village but none are lurking in the wilderness. There are 132 cat statues in Newtonmore painted by their owners in various designs. Some really nice and some a bit wacky but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
There is a bit of a steep climb after we reach the cemetery end of town and head into the countryside north of the village. The original track has been closed due to erosion of the hillside so we skirt Calder Glen at this point.
Once we are at the end of the diversion we will get super views of the hills and we can sit and admire them for a while as we have our lunch.
Soon after we reach a minor road in the hills before taking a track through fields some which may have cows. As we approach the end of our walk there could be some alpacas and miniature donkeys in a field which belong to the Cairngorm Alpaca Centre.
There is a cafe and toilets at the Highland Folk Museum. They will not be open when we arrive but should be open when we return.
Please note there is a £2 charge for the car park payable by bank card.
