Join us for a gentle countryside loop that takes in the picturesque village of Ardeley, passing through open farmland, and quiet lanes to reach the historic Cromer Windmill - Hertfordshire's only surviving post mill.
We start at Ardeley, a tranquil village with timber-framed cottages and a working community farm. We will pause by St Lawrence Church, which dates back to the 13th century, and the idyllic village green and pond opposite.
Next we will head towards the St Mary the Virgin Church on the outskirts of Walkern. We will pass through fields with views of the surrounding countryside towards the village of Cromer, its charm being its simplicity and sense of timelessness. From here we will head to Cromer Windmill, the mill still standing proudly, once playing a part in the area's agricultural life, and from outside we can appreciate its beauty.
After admiring the windmill we will head back to Ardeley through fields and footpaths to complete the loop. There may be opportunities to see red kites and wildflowers.
There are some short walks along quiet roads and a few road crossings.
There is a tearoom at Ardeley called the Church Farm Cafe or The Jolly Waggoner's PH to have refreshments at the end of the walk. Toilets are available here.
There are no toilets on the walk but plenty opportunity for comfort breaks. It is recommended you bring a water bottle and a snack if you wish for the 3 and a half hour walk. There are some places where the footpath is slightly overgrown so long trousers may be preferable. Walking shoes/boots are recommended.
