Boxford Village Hall is the venue for West Berkshire Ramblers' summer's picnic.
There will be 2 walks, one of around 3.3 miles and the other of around 6.5 miles. Both walks will take us past the River Lambourn and through Boxford village.
The River Lambourn is a classic chalk stream, rising from the aquifers / springs in Lambourn, with water that is fast and clear, and renowned for its quality fishing.
The church of St. Andrew in the Boxford village, an ancient Grade II listed church, is situated at the heart of the village on the banks of the River Lambourn. At the rear of the church, on the riverbank, the Peace Garden can be found. In 2010, workmen uncovered a small Saxon window in the north wall of the chancel. The wooden window frame, carved from a solid piece of timber was most unusual in having a wooden shutter and is believed to be the only one of its kind in England.
We will meet at the village hall at 09:45 for a 10:00 start for the longer walk and at 10:15 for the shorter walk, which will start at 10:30.
The aim is to return to the hall around 13:00 to enjoy our lunch (self-catering or group together with friends for sharing). Food can be eaten inside or out (in which case, maybe bring yourself a deck chair), as you prefer and you could, of course, just come for the picnic.
Picnic materials should be left in cars and both walks will have access to the village hall at 13:00, where toilets and a kitchen are available. We will also be able to heat meals, if required.
After 15:00, we can decamp to the village green if we wish.
Please book online by 6pm, Friday, 18 July.
NB: This Picnic and walks are open to members of West Berkshire Ramblers only.
