West Berkshire Ramblers are one of nine official Ramblers Groups based in Berkshire and our official territory for membership purposes is the west of the county up to a line approximately just east of Thatcham. However, any Ramblers member can request assignment to us wherever they live.
Our group was formed in 1967 and provides walks in the West Berkshire countryside and beyond to help people enjoy walking. The distance and strenuousness of each walk is advertised on our website and typically range from four to fifteen miles.
We organise working parties every two weeks to inspect, clear and maintain footpaths with some trained Ramblers using battery-powered strimmers and hedge-cutters. Volunteer teams also replace old stiles with field gates on paths in the area.
We are actively involved in campaigning on footpath and countryside matters, regularly responding to diversion proposals and planning applications that have the potential to impact the walking environment. More recently several members have become actively involved in the ‘Don’t Lose Your Way’ - National Lost Footpaths Campaign.
Social events such as coach walks, picnics, quizzes, talks and group holidays were also organised.
