West Berkshire

Group name: West Berkshire

This group is a part of Berkshire Area.

Our activities include:
Dog-friendly walks, Short and easy walks, Path maintenance

Our group was formed in 1967 and provides walks in the West Berkshire countryside and beyond to help people enjoy walking.  At least 3 walks take place per week which are led by experienced leaders and range from 4 to 12 miles. In the summer there are Wednesday evening walks of up to 6 miles based on a pub and Sunday coach trips once a month. The coach trips normally offer a choice of three walks of around 6, 9 or 12 miles.

The group also works to protect the places we all love to walk in West Berkshire. As well as monitoring development proposals etc., it has a Ramblers Working Party (RWP) that inspects all the paths in West Berkshire on a rotating basis parish by parish, working in cooperation with West Berkshire Council. It checks the status of issues on the Council’s database, carries out minor maintenance using tools provided by the Council, and reports back on problems that it cannot resolve. There is an associated team which installs gates on rights of way on behalf of the Council - it started in 2004 and put in its 300th gate in November 2019.

For more information about the West Berkshire group see the group’s website.

25th Anniversary of the Lambourn Valley Way

The group celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the inauguration of the Lambourn Valley Way a bit late on Wednesday 9th August 2017. The actual anniversary was the 11th July. The day was mainly rain but it kept dry for the unveiling of a celebratory bench on the route between Eastbury and East Garston by Dr John Davies the Group's first chairman in front of 30 members and guests with the sun shining in the distance. Afterwards people retired to the Plough Inn at Eastbury for dinner.

West Berks Ramblers 50th Anniversary

The group started celebrating its 50th Birthday on Thursday 2nd March 2017 with the unveiling of a gate on Shaw-cum-Donnington Footpath 12 by Dr John Davies the Group's first chairman. He also cut the birthday cakes. The cakes and champagne were enjoyed by around 55 members and guests with the carrot cake being the favourite. Afterwards there were short walks. This started the walking "50 miles for 50 years" which finished at the end of June.

Next up was the 50th Anniversary quiz "50 Questions for 50 Years" on the 10th March. This was enjoyed by over 40 members and guests with some of them giving the quiz master a hard time. There was bottles of wine for the winning team, torches for the second and chocolates for the rest of the teams.

On the 2nd May was the 50th anniversary walk which was based on the first recorded walk of the group. It was a 6.3 mile circular walk across Greenham Common, winding through Newbury and back along the tow path to Thatcham.  At the end of the walk there was cakes to celebrate.

To finish the 50 miles for 50 years there was a 50th anniversary social at the Diamond Tap in Newbury on Thursday 29th June.

Finally (though not until early 2018), two seats were donated for installation on Snelsmore Common 'Presented in memory of the founding members of West Berks Ramblers who are no longer with us'. Both are on the circuit that was followed when the 50th Birthday Gate was unveiled.
