The walk starts in Rosthwaite and follows a rocky track uphill to Watendlath, where coffee can be enjoyed by the Tarn. The walk continues by the Watendlath Beck, descending on a rugged path by a gorge, to the road and then to the bottom of Derwentwater. The return follows the River Derwent, including undulating rocky paths.
This walk is moderate but will be done at a leisurely pace. It is harder than many walks undertaken by the leisurely group as most of the route is on rocky tracks and includes some steep ascents and descents. It is therefore proposed to have a tea/refreshment (ice cream) break in Grange, on the way back. Hence finishing the walk later than usual.
