A slightly different walk to a well-known landmark overlooking the upper Eden valley and with views on a good day towards the Lake District, the Howgills and the North Pennines. We start from Kirkby Stephen but follow lesser used paths over fields, farmland and moorland, via Lockthwaite and Ladthwaite before joining the well trodden track to the Standards themselves. We will retrace our steps by Faraday Gill to reach the road down to Hartley quarries and back to Kirkby Stephen.
The old route up to Ladthwaite via Ewbank Scar is now impassable but the alternative is full of interest, on mainly good paths and tracks, with lovely views in all directions. Some sections may be boggy after rain and some may be rocky. The walk will be at a moderate pace.
