We leave the car park in Patterdale to follow the well trodden route to Thornhow End, this includes some steep rocky sections. Our path then levels out and gives our legs a little respite before our final steep rocky climb onto St Sunday Crag Summit (2756ft/840m). There will be time to rest and enjoy the spectacular views all around, weather permitting.
From here we head eastward to visit Gavel Pike, which gives good views over Deepdale, before we follow a faint grassy path to re-join the main path above Blind Cove. From this sometimes boggy col we climb easily on a grassy path to Birks (2040ft/622m), before descending steeply to Trough Head. We then follow the path over knolls and dips to reach the little top of Arnison Crag (1424ft/434m). After negotiating an awkward little rocky notch (optional) we follow the path beneath Oxford Crag back to our cars, with another three Wainwrights under our belts, if you are counting!
