Caerleon (meaning City of Legions) is the only permanent Roman base within the borders of modern Wales, and steeped in history.
Starting at the Roman Amphitheatre we will walk alongside part of the old fortress wall and down to the River Usk. After crossing the river we go into the woodland on Chepstow Hill. We enter the grounds of the Celtic Manor Golf Course, taking in the far reaching views. Following part of the Usk Valley Way and footpaths which run through the golf club we will drop back down close to the clubhouse and re-cross the river using the Twenty Ten footbridge which was constructed for the 2010 Ryder Cup. Passing through open fields and woodland, to the edge of Ponthir village. (We can stop for lunch at the Ponthir House Inn, either your own or bought in the pub. as long as some of us purchase a drink - could be tea or coffee, but we can decide this on the day). Going through the village, across fields and into Lodge Wood, we will make our way back down to the River Usk, where we will pick up the footpath that brings us back to the start, past the old Roman Barracks.
