PLEASE NOTE – registrations open two weeks in advance of the walk (i.e. Saturday 24th January). PLEASE DON’T contact the walk leader until then! Please also remember to include a mobile number when you sign up.
This is an easy 9.5 mile walk along the cycle path that anyone who has been on the Edinburgh via Bathgate train line will have noticed. So – maybe a bit of route march along tarmac, but hopefully a decent winter outing. (Note – the nice photo was taken in the summer!)
Starting from Caldercruix station, we’ll walk along the pavement for about half a mile before the off-road track which we’ll follow all the way to Armadale. Hillend Loch appears soon and unless the weather’s dreadful, we’ll follow a smaller path for a short distance beside the water before a coffee stop at the end of the loch (about two-and-a-half miles from the start point). The cycle track then runs close to the railway – we’ll stop for lunch after another three miles. Blackridge station is about a mile after that (six miles from the start) and a potential exit point – but that would mean missing the final three mile section which is probably the nicest as it meanders away from the railway. From Armadale station there are trains back to Glasgow Queen Street every 30 minutes or so.
The walk is on clear paths, almost all hard surface apart from the bit beside the loch which may be muddy, boggy or full of puddles. Please wear suitable boots. This walk will be OK in cold or wet weather but will be cancelled if there’s snow or ice as the tarmac can get very slippery
There may be a working toilet on the train. There may be a bit of cover beside Hillend Loch or along the way – but not much.
Walkers should carry an "in case of emergency" card with contact details.
