Overview

This is an 11 mile circular walk starting at Irvine Railway Station. The route provides the walkers with a great overview of the many different aspects of what Irvine has to offer. We head down to Irvine harbour and walk 3 miles on the sandy beach to Barassie, before making our way through a residential area. From there on, we follow The National Cycle Network where we will experience the industrial side of Irvine, passing Auchengate Sawmill and The Caledonian Papermill. As we walk through Shewalton Woods we enjoy some scenic woodland areas, the soothing sounds of nature, a wildlife reserve and pass an expansive tranquil reservoir. After leaving the woods we return to Irvine's harbourside via a more elevated path running beneath The Stone Dragon and skirting the pond within Irvine Beach Park. Weather dependent we will enjoy the breath taking views across  The Firth of Clyde both at the start and the end of the walk.

Circular Walk

Registration for this walk opens two weeks in advance of the walk(i.e. 28th February). Remember to include a mobile number when you sign up.

Meet outside M&S Central Station at 9.15am having bought a return ticket to Irvine. We will be catching the 9.30 train to Ayr and the train should arrive in Irvine at 10.05.

The walk is mostly on sand, pavement or cycle paths so sturdy footwear is advisable as walking for several miles on tarmac can become a bit tiring.

We have to cross some major, busy roads where great care is required ... there are no crossings.

Morning break will be at the benches as we approach Barassie and lunch will be in The Shewalton Woods. There are no toilet facilities until we return back to the harbour, although there is the possibility of some cover in the woods.

The harbourside has a variety of cafes and pubs for those wishing to enjoy a refreshment before heading for the train.
