Overview

Capital Ring: Stoke Newington to Hackney Wick (with an optional extra walk through the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park).

Most of this short section of the Ring is easy level walking along the River Lee Navigation. The first section of the path is very rough so shoes with thick soles are advised. The whole path Is shared with cyclists so we need to be alert.

Start time 10.30am at Stoke Newington Station

Stoke Newington Station is two stops south of Seven Sisters (Victoria Line) on the Weaver Line to London Liverpool Street. There are no cafes or toilets at the station but King Frank, a coffee shop in nearby Cazenove Road, will let you use its toilet if you buy a coffee. There are toilets in Springfield Park, about fifteen minutes into the walk, but no more until the end of the walk.

After a short walk through streets we reach Springfield Park then descend to the River Lee Navigation, and we will stay on paths next to the river for the rest of the walk, about 3 miles. We pass Walthamstow Marshes and then Leyton Marsh, two large open spaces now managed as nature reserves. Further along we pass Hackney Marshes and Wick Community Woodland. We will leave the path near Hackney Wick Overground Station (Mildmay Line) and we will have lunch on benches near the new V&A Storehouse which has a café and toilets.

If desired we can extend the walk after lunch by about 1.5 miles, walking through the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to Stratford Underground Station and looking at some of the gardens in the park and the new buildings on the East Bank.
