Cassop
The walk of just over 5 miles and starts by going through Cassop Vale National Nature Reserve and is then generally along paths across pasture land. There were young bulls on my recce who were behind a fence in a field but right by the path so we cannot allow dogs on today's walk as they may have been moved to a field that has an issue with it's fence.
There are a few gradients, more towards the end of the walk, but they are mostly fairly gentle and rest halts can be made. There are only 3 stiles. On the day of the recce the ground was dry but the start of the walk can get muddy if we have a lot of rain.
Walking poles will be useful for the gradients of which there are a few. You will be ready for your lunch by the end of the walk. There are great views of the Durham countryside and the Cathedral can be seen in the distance. We walk down to Kelloe then back up through Little Wood Nature reserve. We will see how an area once known for its mines and quarries has become transformed into a SSSI and varied fauna and flora.
After the walk we may take some refreshment at The Green Lane Garden Centre TS29 6BF
or at The Farmhouse Kitchen at Leamside opposite the Three Horse Shoe pub. What3Words: bucked.gambles.dollar.
