An autumnal walk around the countryside surrounding the Fairy-tale Castle of Castell Coch.
The castle is open until 4pm so there is time for you to have a look around after the walk. Admission charge £10, free for CADW members.
Since we have some way to travel to visit the area, we’ll meet up at the Guildhall and share cars to Castell Coch.
Please try to pre-arrange a lift as we cannot guarantee a space to be available on the day. Remember to offer a donation to the driver (e.g. £3) to cover their petrol expenses - so please bring change with you.
This is a popular area for locals to enjoy the countryside and trails have been created through the woodland.
Hopefully, the trees will have changed to their autumn tints and as we go along, we also will see some carvings. The woodland is set high above the River Taf, so occasionally we will have views across the surrounding area.
The walk is mostly leisurely but we will begin with a short, steep climb into Fforest Fawr.
Following some of the forest trails, we’ll come to a viewpoint over Taff’s Well and Craig-yr-Allt. We then continue to the next woodland, Fforestganol before emerging into fields with more views.
We will descend a long and uneven path through Greenmeadow Wood which eventually emerges into a contrasting landscape of the busy road connections into Cardiff. Even here there is woodland as we pass under the M4 on our way to the River Taf.
Following the river northward, we enter the village of Tongwynlais and make a gentle urban ascent of the road back to the start of our walk.
