Overview

Our walk begins in Cavedale, an atmospheric place carved out of the valley by glaciers, leaving steep sides and rocky outcrops. Initially this is a rough, rocky ascent on limestone and can be slippery when wet! The castle sits high above us as we climb. We leave the valley behind and continue through lead mining country to Old Dam and Eldon Hill. We will take an optional look at the quarry.
The hard work of the day is done! We soon have views of Mam Tor and the Great Ridge as we head for our lunch break at Windy Knoll.
Our return to Castleton is down Winnats Pass with high limestone ridges - know to the Romans as Windy Gates - a great way to end the day!
