The walk starts up the Sticks Pass route then turns onto the rocky, bouldered path along the shoulder of the higher Crags to Swirls car Park. Crossing the A591, via the underpass, the route to Great How follows a woodland path adjacent to Thirlmere shore-line. After the path up Great How the woodland path leads to the Dam road, again alongside the shore-line. A circuit of road and field walking returns to the start. There is an option to do a supervised return ascent of Great How or take a waiting tea-break. The ascent would add an extra 0.65 miles distance and 300 feet height.
Dogs are welcome but must be under close control. In view of the mostly narrow, single file paths dogs must be on a lead.
Although graded as moderate it will be at a leisurely pace.
