This walk from Hastings to Rye starts with a testing walk over the four hills along the coast East from Hastings - think Seven Sisters without the crowds, climbs through ancient forest to open tops and views over the sea and along the sandstone cliffs, all packed into 4 hills (the Fraternal Four?}.
After the fourth hill the Coastal Path goes gently downhill through Fairlight to the pebble Beach at Pett Level where we will eat our picnic lunch, have a paddle (or swim) in the sea, and if wished a coffee or ice cream at the cafe.
Our route will continue along the beach until we turn up towards Winchelsea where we will have an opportunity to look around Edward I's historic town and large church with very fine windows (and the grave of Spike Milligan), and perhaps drop into the New Inn for rehydration.
After this spiritual and physical refreshment we will next pass Henry VIII's Camber Castle and walk through the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and into Rye.
Please note that while the walk has been graded at moderate the initial 4 hills are steep, including a number of stairs., though the path underfoot is good.
The walk will start from Hastings Station - 8.52 train from Sevenoaks arriving 10.04, for those coming by train. If coming by car drive to Rye and get the 9.48 train to Hastings arriving 10.10.
At the end of the walk those who came by train will get a train back to Hastings from Rye.
If coming by car please share if possible. Contact the leader if you require a lift.
