A lovely, varied walk starting from outside Downe village church (St Mary the Virgin), passing near Darwin’s Down House, continuing through woodland and fields towards Cudham where we stop for a break on the recreation ground. There are several RAF Airmen buried at the adjoining St Peter’s & St Paul’s Church and for those interested in history, we will visit their graves and learn more about these brave Airmen.
We leave Cudham heading through fields of livestock towards Cacket’s Lane, then head west towards Berry’s Green, walking through the undulating woodland at Blackbush Shaw. We will stop along this ancient woodland for a short lunch break.
Continuing through Cherry Lodge Golf Club, we head through farmland turning north towards Leasons Wood. If we are lucky, here we may see police dogs in training! We then head along the ridgeline with views of West Kent Golf Club and hopefully some Spitfires taking to the air from Biggin Hill. We then cut across farmland, heading back towards Downe village and optional refreshments at the George & Dragon or The Queen’s Head.
This is a collaborative walk led by a dynamic duo and facilitated by the nominal leader.
There are two hills on the walk and the one near Cudham is quite steep. There are also steps to navigate in the woodlands. Towards the end of the walk there are 4 stiles. While most of the walk is fairly flat, the ground can be uneven and after rain, some paths may be slippery.
Please bring a picnic lunch.
No dogs please as we pass through fields with livestock and horses.
