Ebchester
A moderate, circular walk of just over 8.5 miles, starting from Ebchester Old Bridge.
We initially take a north west route through Hepper Hill Park Wood following a single track. The wood in places must have suffered strong winds at sometime, as there is an abundance of fallen trees throughout. Although there is sporadic mud patches along the track, this is expected to dry out in time for the ramble. There are a few short sharp rises along this route but it is mainly flat.
Heading south towards Wood House we then cross quite pleasant open green fields towards the quite charming village of Whittonstall. At this point we then turn to a north easterly direction, where the views of the countryside are fabulous. We then cross fields of sheep (with babies of course) and onto Ryehill Wood. We shall stop for a spot of lunch in this area.
On conclusion of the forest walk we then ramble alongside Rye Hill to the start of Milk Wellburn Wood where we head north along excellent tracked paths but rather steep in places. We then head south and reach the River Derwent. A most pleasing and picturesque walk following the river path will see us return to our initial starting point.
A five mile walk will also be available.
Directions to the start point:
From Chester Le Street take the A693 towards Stanley. Keep to the A693 until the junction of the A692 and turn left. At the first roundabout take the 4th exit towards Medomsley. Continue along the road for about a mile and turn left at the junction (Sign posted Ebchester B6309). After 200 metres turn right onto the B6309. This is a long steep bank that leads to the A694. Turn right and almost immediately turn left down the steep hill of Chare Bank. Follow the road for 300 metres and just after the County Sign "Northumberland" turn left onto Bridge End. This area is a Cul De Sac and leads only to a few houses and the sealed off Ebchester Old Bridge.
