Mam Tor is among the 31 'Ethels' summits in the Peak District that are more than 500 metres above sea level. They are named after Ethel Haythornthwaite, who campaigned vigorously for the Peak District to become the UK's first National Park in 1951. MWW aims to ascend all 31 of these Ethels.
The walk starts from Edale Railway Station. We soon have a significant ascent towards the summit of Mam Tor, which is 524 metres high, so a good degree of fitness is required. However, after the initial Mam Tor ascent, the walk is fairly easy and very pleasant as we choose a lower path beyond Hollins Cross to walk down to Lose Hill Lane. On our way back, there is a minor ascent to Jaggers Clough before we take a stroll back to Edale. The views are stunning in all parts of this walk.
