Leader: Jim M
We will be going across some boggy ground, so ideally wear gaiters. It is a slightly tougher walk than the distance or elevation suggest.
Meet Point: Near the ticket barriers, or on the platform at Piccadilly Station. Alternatively, meet the group on the train, or at the Walk Start at Chinley Station.
Transport to Walk Start: 09:48 train from Manchester Piccadilly to Chinley (End point Sheffield). This will be a busy train, so get on as soon as it is at the platform to secure seats.
Suggested Ticket: Off-Peak Day Return to Edale. Or you could get two singles.
Walk Start: At Chinley Station at 10:25
Waypoints: Alders Farm, Bradshaw Fields, Andrews Farm, Mount Famine, South Head, Brown Knoll, Kinder Low, The top of Kinder (636m), Pym Chair, Wool Packs, Crowden Tower, Grindslow Knoll, The Nags Head.
Return Services: xx:47
Extra: There are no toilets at Chinley Station. Assume no working toilet on the train. There are no toilets on the walk. Optional drinks at the end of the walk. Please do not bring your dog (apart from assistance dogs).
Have you ever been to the summit of the Kinder Plateau, the highest point in the Peak District? Until last year, I thought I had. Countless times! But I hadn’t. So for a short section of this walk, between Kinder Low and Pym Chair, we will walk across the plateau, to find the very top, before walking back to the edge at Pym Chair.
The rest of the route takes in multiple Ethels. Ascending from Chinley, we’ll visit Mount Famine, South Head, Brown Knoll, before reaching Kinder Low. We’ll descend from the Kinder Plateau via Grindslow Knoll down to Edale village, for well earned refreshments in the Nags Head. Or you can continue to the station, or the Penny Pot Café, before getting the train home.
