This varied and scenic walk takes in some of the most historic and picturesque parts of the Peak District. We begin by heading towards Stoney Middleton, passing notable landmarks that made the area famous, including the Plague Cottages and the Boundary Stone. We will also pass St Martin’s Church, one of only two octagonal churches in the country.
From here, the route crosses the River Derwent towards Froggatt, where we join the Derwent Valley Heritage Way. This section is an easier stretch, following riverside paths and woodland trails northwards to Leadmill Bridge. After crossing, we head south again, with a gentle ascent towards Leam, where we will stop for lunch.
The return leg takes us across Eyam Moor, visiting Mompessons Well before making our way back to the car park.
The route is approximately 9 miles (measured the traditional string on a map way) and, while moderate, the main climbs are sensibly placed either side of the lunch stop.
We had a lovely day for the recce - let us hope for the same on the day.
Start time: 10:00am prompt (we set off with whoever is present).
