This walks starts from Greenhead, just over the Northumberland border. The first section is on a narrow track between the railway line and Tipalt Burn. It will pass Thirwall Castle before steadily climbing up a grassy path to reach Walltown Country Park which provides an ideal coffee stop with toilets and picnic benches. Gravel paths and grassy slopes lead up onto the Wall. An undulating path continues past Walltown Turret, after which there is an option to climb a steep section of the wall. The main group will take a lower path, to meet up with the higher level route at a ladder stile.
Lunch will be taken on some rocks, before leaving the Wall to descend down a track and follow a disused railway line and an asphelt path to the Roman Army Museum. Finally taking a footpath across the fields back to Greenhead.
There are 4 stone stiles and 4 ladder stiles. Two of the ladder stiles can be avoided but 2 cannot. The stone stiles are very sturdy but one is very wide at the top.
This is a moderate walk at a leisurely pace.
