We leave the National Trust car park at Honister Slate Mine following the sign to Grey Knotts. We gain height quickly as we climb steadily, following the line of a fence. As we crest the ridge of Grey Knotts, there are views of Great Gable ahead in the distance. Our route levels off as we head towards Brandreth. After peaking Brandreth we head towards Green Gable and Great Gable with views of Ennerdale and the Borrowdale Valley. Passing Windy Gap we start the short but steep ascent to the rocky summit of Great Gable.
Ensuring we take the right route off the summit of Great Gable, we make our descent. Care is needed as it is steep with loose rocks. There are views of Wasdale and Wast Water on our left as we take the route towards Moses Trod. The route shortly levels off with grass slopes. Buttermere and Crummock Water come into view further along Moses' Trod.
We pass Innominate Tarn on our right, Alfred Wainwright's final resting place and onto his favourite summit of Haystacks.
Coming away from Haystacks, we retrace our steps to pass to the left of Innominate Tarn heading towards Dubs Quarry and the Dismantled Tramway path that takes us back to Honister Slate Mine.
Uneven, rocky terrain with a short section of hands on scrambling on the steep ascent to Great Gable.
If the weather is good the views will be amazing. There will be an alternative route offered if weather is poor or cloud base is low with heavy rain.
