A moderately paced 11 mile walk with lots of variety: common land, a new forest with countryside views, Sandridge village with its Norman church, the country estate of Childwickbury - including the lovely church of St. Mary’s and the Manor House where Stanley Kubrick lived - plus the walk highlight of the historic city of St Albans.
Substantial areas of level ground with a few modest inclines. Expect mud in parts. A couple of busy roads to cross.
Route: Initially crossing Harpenden Common, the route then takes us into the Heartwood Forest and Sandridge Village. After lunch we join the Hertfordshire Way before entering the Chiswickbury Estate and finally St.Albans.
Lunch Stop: Sandridge Village, churchyard with benches for picnics, pubs & tea rooms.
Meet at Harpenden Station at 10.00.
Travel: St Pancras 09.21/West Hampstead Thameslink 09.29 - Thameslink train to Bedford - arr Harpenden 09.47.
Ticket/Fare: Off-Peak Day Return to Harpenden £11.30/Railcard £7.45/SRC+FP £6.05 (FP - buy from Elstree/Borehamwood).
Finish: St Albans City Station at about 16.00.
