We start by walking to Westferry Circus and then walk around the Isle of Dogs, mainly beside the river, taking in many historical points of interest. Following the Thames Path down the west side of the Isle of Dogs, we see the place where the Great Eastern ship was (eventually) launched and enjoy some lovely views from Island Gardens across the Thames to the Cutty Sark and maritime Greenwich. If you only want a 3 mile walk you can go home from Island Gardens DLR station. We shall have a short refreshment stop at a cafe in Island Gardens, which also has outdoor seating if you don’t want to go in and make a purchase. Continuing up the east side, we see a variety of interesting sights including an amazing pumping station and a house where Nelson once lived. Then we walk on to the Poplar Waterside and Marina, finally returning to Canary Wharf, looking down on Billingsgate fish market on the way.
Please note that the finish time may be variable, as it depends on how long people want to spend reading the many information boards about the points of interest.
There are toilets in the underground shopping centre at Canary Wharf, but none in the underground station itself. There is also a public toilet at Westferry Circus. The cafe has a toilet, but only one, so if there are a lot of us we may have to queue.
