Overview

An interesting high-level circuit at the head of Weardale taking in the mining heritage.

Our route follows the Weardale Way from Cowshill to Killhope lead-mining museum crossing the Cowhorse Hush and Cuthbert's Level. From here we climb up onto the moor on the Carrier's Way (the route for carrying ore to the East Allen for smelting - you will encounter some 'bags of ore' on the path!). From Great Hill we head to Killhope Law. Along the ridge we should have views across to Cross Fell and Great Dunn Fell, across the Weardale valley, and hopefully north to the Cheviots! Our descent to Cowshill follows a bridleway across Burtree Fell and Poppet Hill.

The walk starts from the small car park in Cowshill. This is signposted from the A689 on the left after the Cowshill Hotel if you are entering the village from Allendale or, if entering from the east, it is on your right just before the bridge. Car sharing is highly recommended and we try to offer an informal share from the Wentworth car park in Hexham. Please contact the walk leader if you are interested (driver or passenger).
