A delightful walk north of Ryal with plenty of interest.
From Ryal the route goes north to Hallington via Westside and Fairspring, and follows a section of the Whittledean watercourse built in the 1860s as part of the network of aqueducts and reservoirs to supply Newcastle. After Hallington we visit Kirkheaton, via the small wind farm. The return passes the extensive workings of Mootlaw quarry and Mootlaw (with the remains of a medieval beacon).
An opportunity to relax at the Queen's Head in Great Whittington afterwards.
