The walk starts through the Blackburn Park and up a footpath to Caskieben. From there we climb up to Kirkhill Forest. We walk up to the ~Tappie Tower on Tyrebagger Hill, 250m. The walk winds anti-clockwise through the Forest, (mostly on single track paths), and crosses the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route to the Stone Circle overlooking the Airport. Then we cross back again and go around the north side of the Hill of Marcus, down to Begsley Farm and back to the car park along the banks of the Blackburn river.
In the winter conditions experienced on the recce (13th January) this was a tough Moderate walk with Kahtoola / Yaktrax on our boots. If you are in any doubt about your experience for the winter walk, please contact one of the two leaders to discuss.

Good walking boots, NOT trainers, (it will be wet and muddy in parts), gaiters most advisable and warm clothing, hats and gloves, waterproofs (jacket and overtrousers) essential. Bring an extra fleece In a “dry bag”. Pack some spare gloves & hat in your rucksack for all winter walks. Bring food and drink. Walking poles required for winter conditions. If there is a covering of snow and ice, please bring your winter micro spikes (eg Kahtoola) or other “ice grippers” to avoid falls. These are very useful safety kit for many Aberdeenshire Ramblers’ winter . They pull on over boots and have mini spikes or metal nobbles under both the heel and sole (see kit notes at the front of the Inverurie walks programme.)
